Down Sleeping Bag 20°F Review — Hands-On Test & Verdict
Our Verdict
Excellent down sleeping bag for three-season backpacking. Outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio with reliable water-resistant treatment.
Full Review
Down sleeping bags have a reputation for being finicky in wet conditions, but the TerraNova 20°F bag with water-resistant down treatment changes the equation. We tested this bag on a rainy October trip in the Pacific Northwest where condensation was unavoidable. The 800-fill power down maintained its loft surprisingly well, and we stayed warm at 25°F without feeling clammy. The mummy shape with draft collar is efficiently designed — there are no cold spots, and the hood cinches down to a tiny breathing hole. Packed size is impressively small; it compresses to about the size of a large grapefruit. The included compression sack is well-made with sturdy straps. Maintenance is key with down — store it uncompressed at home, and use a sleeping bag liner to extend time between washes. For the price, the warmth-to-weight ratio is outstanding.
