Unisex Thermal Ski Base Layer Review — Hands-On Test & Verdict
Our Verdict
Outstanding merino base layer for cold-weather enthusiasts. Superior odor control and temperature regulation justify the premium price.
Full Review
Base layers are the foundation of any layering system, and the SnowPeak Merino Thermal Base Layer sets a high bar. The 65% merino blend hits the sweet spot — enough wool for odor resistance and temperature regulation, with polyester added for durability and shape retention. During a 5-day backcountry ski trip in Colorado, we wore this base layer for 3 consecutive days without washing, and it still smelled acceptable (your tent mates will thank you). The flatlock seams are genuinely comfortable — no irritation even with a heavy backpack. Temperature regulation is the standout feature; it keeps you warm during long chairlift rides but does not overheat during bootpacks. The thumb loops are a small detail that makes a big difference when layering. Worth the investment if you ski or hike regularly in cold conditions.
